This late 19th-century Shanxi elm bench has a deep brown finish transformed by age, revealing layers of reddish, honey, and lighter natural wood that create nearly four distinct tones across the surface. Its most striking feature is the dramatically curved back, where carved court officials and subtle Chinese motifs follow the movement of the wood, giving the bench an almost surreal, sculptural quality. The combination of exaggerated curves, intricate carving, and naturally developed patina makes it especially unusual from every angle.
