At nearly ten feet wide, this early-19th-century Burmese carved panel feels monumental in person, but it’s the incredible detail that keeps you standing in front of it. Deeply carved from a single piece of soft wood, the scene unfolds three-dimensionally, with figures worshipping Buddha while villagers around them go about their everyday lives, each person seemingly caught in their own small moment. The surface is rough and heavily textured, with softly faded polychrome, areas of exposed wood and a clay-like grey tone that reveal its age. The longer you look, the more you find. It has the presence of a museum piece, but the intimacy of looking into another time and place.
