Antique 19th Century Chinese Black & Red Lacquered Chinoiserie Altar Storage Chest Table

This is one of those pieces where the closer you get, the more detail you notice. Crafted in elmwood, this late 19th-century Chinese altar chest has a wonderfully aged black lacquered finish with warm red lacquer showing through along the carved edges and raised details.

Across the front is an unusual arrangement of small paneled drawers, each decorated with delicate hand-painted gilt Chinoiserie scenes of flowers, foliage and birds. The darker lacquer has developed beautifully with age, giving the painted decoration a softer, timeworn appearance rather than looking overly polished or restored.

What really gives the piece its presence are the sides. Deeply carved openwork scrolls run vertically along the front corners, while the substantial carved legs have an almost sculptural quality of their own. Above, the long altar-style top terminates in dramatic upturned scroll ends, creating that unmistakable traditional Chinese silhouette.

From the side and back, you can really see the construction and age of the wood, while the front is considerably more decorative. It’s a piece that works beautifully against a wall as an altar or console table, but the drawers also make it functional as an unusual storage chest.

The aged lacquer, exposed areas of red, gilt decoration and visible wear are all part of the character the piece has developed over well over a century.
