Monumental Italian Neoclassical Revival Gilt Mythological Sea Creature Center Table with Faux Tortoiseshell, Sculptural Floral Urn Base & Black Floral Inlaid Top
This is one of those pieces that completely commands a room before you have even had the opportunity to study the details. Monumental in scale and extraordinarily decorative, this Italian Neoclassical Revival style center table combines a dramatic black-and-gold palette with faux tortoiseshell surfaces, elaborate floral ornament and four remarkable sculptural mythological sea creatures supporting the circular top.
Standing in front of it, your eye immediately goes to the large black circular top, which is almost completely covered in an intricate contrasting floral and foliate design. Long scrolling vines move across the dark ground in a loose, almost embroidered pattern, punctuated by flowers, leaves and curling tendrils. The decoration gives the broad tabletop tremendous movement while the black ground keeps the overall appearance sophisticated rather than overly ornate.
Below the top is where the table becomes truly exceptional.
The deep circular apron is finished in a richly mottled faux tortoiseshell pattern, creating layers of amber, caramel, brown and black beneath the darker top. Sections of pierced gilt scrolling foliage wrap around the apron, while additional gilt ornament creates a jeweled effect when the table is viewed from across the room.
Supporting the top are four enormous sculptural mythological sea creatures, each individually modeled with pronounced scales, fins, expressive faces and dramatically curled tails. Their bodies rise upward from separate shaped plinths, creating the impression that the tabletop is being carried above them. The gilded surfaces highlight every scale and contour, while darker detailing within the carving gives the figures remarkable depth.
At the center of the base is an elaborate classical urn overflowing with sculpted flowers and foliage. Heavy floral garlands extend outward toward the surrounding supports, visually connecting the four creatures and filling what would normally be empty space beneath the table. It is an extraordinary detail that becomes even more impressive as you walk around the piece.
There really is no back or secondary side to this table. It was designed to be seen in the round. From every angle, the combination of the curling tails, sculptural bodies, central floral urn, garlands, pierced gilt apron and elaborate top creates a different view.
This is not a table that disappears into an interior. It is an architectural statement piece—the type of furnishing that could anchor a grand foyer, formal salon, gallery, luxury hotel, designer residence or dramatic retail environment entirely on its own.
Its unusual combination of Neoclassical references, fantastical marine imagery, faux tortoiseshell decoration, extensive gilding and floral ornament gives it the exuberance of European Revival furniture while making it wonderfully eccentric and memorable.
