There’s something incredibly peaceful about this pair of 19th-century Burmese monastic attendants, despite how substantial they feel in person. Each is carved from heavy wood with a slender, elegant form, elaborate headdresses and ornate necklaces set with smoky glass that still holds a subtle shine. Up close, their age is impossible to miss—the surface is rough and deeply textured, with heavily worn and cracked lacquer revealing layers of wood beneath. Standing nearly five feet tall, they have the presence of quiet protectors: regal, incredibly old and beautifully imperfect. You can’t help but wonder what these figures have stood beside and witnessed over the last century.
