Antique Victorian English W. & T. Avery Birmingham Brass Beam Weighing Scale on Wood Base
An impressive antique English balance scale manufactured by W. & T. Avery of Birmingham, England, one of Britain’s historic makers of weighing equipment.
Dating to the Victorian period, the scale features an elaborate brass balance-beam mechanism mounted on a substantial rectangular wood platform. The tall central column supports an ornate pierced and cast brass framework terminating in a decorative pointed finial, giving this utilitarian instrument a surprisingly architectural presence.
The horizontal balance beam retains its suspended circular brass weighing pan to one side and a large rectangular brass platform to the opposing side. Fine metal suspension rods, hooks and fittings remain visible throughout, highlighting the mechanical construction of the scale.

The warm aged brass, dark wood base and exposed mechanical components give the piece wonderful character and make it equally appealing as a piece of English industrial history, scientific equipment, or sculptural decorative art.
