An extraordinary late 19th-century French carved wooden carousel horse, featuring an unusual double leather saddle and a beautifully sculptural rocking base.
The horse is depicted in a spirited galloping pose, with an elongated neck, expressive open mouth, finely modeled facial features, and a carved flowing mane. Its distinctive gray-painted body contrasts beautifully with the dark mane, hooves, and rich brown leather double saddle.
Originally created as a carousel horse, the piece has been converted into a rocking horse with the removal of its original carousel pole and the addition of a substantial curved wooden rocker base. The base features a central slatted platform and gracefully shaped wooden runners.
Measuring over seven feet in length, this monumental antique combines the whimsical charm of historic French amusement rides with the craftsmanship of 19th-century carved wooden folk art.
A rare and captivating statement piece for a grand entryway, gallery, boutique hotel, private collection, or eclectic interior.
