Chinese Shanxi Black Lacquer Apothecary Cabinet, Late 19th Century
Regular price$7,500.00 USD

This late-19th-century Shanxi apothecary cabinet is one of those pieces that gets better the closer you get. The glossy black lacquer is heavily worn from more than a century of use, revealing glimpses of the natural wood beneath, while faded Chinese characters can still be seen across many of its 52 drawers. Each small iron pull opens to a surprisingly deep drawer, some divided into two or four compartments originally used for medicinal storage. At 75 inches tall, it has a substantial, elegant presence, but it’s the uneven finish, faded lettering and layers of age that give this piece its character.
