An exceptionally ornate French Louis XVI / Napoleon III Revival style console table and matching mirror, conceived as a complete architectural ensemble and lavishly decorated from top to bottom.
The console immediately catches the eye with its black marble top, beautifully contrasting against the warm, highly polished mahogany-toned frame. Beneath the marble, the apron is covered with elaborate gilt floral decoration, including dimensional rose bouquets, trailing foliage and a remarkable series of draped floral garlands and swags suspended across the front.
The detailing continues down the substantial squared legs, where additional gilt floral mounts, ribbon and swag ornament and decorative borders emphasize the vertical lines of the base. A beautifully shaped stretcher joins the legs below, following a sweeping serpentine curve and carrying additional gilt decoration. Even the feet are finished with ornamental gilt mounts. This is a piece designed to be viewed closely—the ornament continues well beyond the areas normally decorated on a console.
The accompanying mirror repeats the same materials and decorative vocabulary, creating a particularly impressive matched set. Its broad mahogany-toned frame is outlined with contrasting dark trim and surrounded by delicate gilt trailing vines. Raised bouquets of roses and foliage are positioned around the perimeter, tying the mirror directly to the floral mounts of the console.
Together, the two pieces have the scale and presence of furnishings originally intended for a grand entrance hall, formal salon or richly appointed interior. The combination of dark marble, warm wood and abundant gold ornament gives the set an unmistakably opulent French Revival character.
